If someone comes around Abba House for any length of time, they’ll realize it is an active place. We have a lot going on, such as running a thrift store, maintaining multiple yards, cooking for 20 people three times a day, as well as maintaining four houses.
In order for Abba House to follow its first priority, helping women who are broken heal and learn to function, we need help to get it all done. Our need for help has been responded to by numerous volunteers.
Over the past few years our number of volunteers has shot through the roof. Abba House hosts a volunteer workday the first Saturday of every month. This is a time when small groups, community groups, and individuals come together to work on whatever we need done. For more information about volunteering for workday or just in general, call 678-208-2000 Ext. 107 or Sign up to volunteer.
Workday Accomplishments!
On January 5, 2008, we hosted a workday where we switched the clothing and furniture rooms in our thrift store to allow for more space for our clothes. This was a big job that included lifting and moving all of the furniture as well as taking down the clothing racks and all of the clothes. A large group of volunteers, many from the Rotary Club of North Forsyth 400, came out to help—we couldn’t have done it without them!
Another workday involved a lot of hard work and volunteers. On May 3, around 150 people came out to help Abba House in what is the largest workday in our history. Almost all of the volunteers came from Mountain Lake Church, located in Cumming. Over the last few years individuals from Mountain Lake have been great supporters of Abba House by consistently volunteering their time to help us in any way we have needed it.

The main project the volunteers undertook was the makeover of two of the Abba Houses. They replaced floors with new linoleum and carpet and replaced countertops, put in new fans and light fixtures, painted walls, added new bedspreads and furniture, and re-decorated. The women felt like they were in brand new homes and were truly blessed to see people give so much of their time and effort to make something special for them.
Community and work groups and individuals come out often to help us accomplish projects, such as mulching flower beds and painting the thrift store.
It is amazing to see how God and the people in this community have answered our call for help far above what we could hope for. Thank you volunteers!
