Abba House Volunteer Opportunities

mother and sonON-GOING OPPORTUNITIES
The following opportunities require making an on-going weekly or monthly commitment. These are areas where we will be depending on these activities taking place for our daily scheduling.

  1. Thrift Store Volunteers
Weekly commitment – Abba House receives donations on a daily basis. We have a need for help sorting and pricing donated items and placing them on the store floor.
  2. Yard/Garden Work
Yard work – weekly commitment – maintaining grounds at Thrift store and three residences. Includes cutting grass, weeding flower beds, cutting underbrush and trees, spreading mulch, planting trees and flowers, and using a weedeater. Garden – weekly commitment (March through October) – involves initial preparation of garden in spring, tilling, establishing rows, planting, mulching walkways, weeding, hoeing around seedlings, watering, fertilizing, and harvesting crops.
  3. Cooler/Freezer Maintenance
Weekly commitment – Abba House receives food donations from various stores each week. We need volunteers to sort and organize items in freezers, rotate, make a list of contents, and sort cooler produce; discarding spoilage on compost pile and preparing items in abundance to be frozen.
  4. Building/Residence Maintenance
Weekly commitment – The thrift store and residences are continually in need of various types of repair. We need individuals who can evaluate needs and make repairs as well as individuals who will volunteer to respond to emergency repair calls, i.e. broken water pipes.
  5. Lawn Equipment/Automobile Repair
Monthly commitment (unless repair is urgent) - We have many pieces of lawn main-tenance equipment and 6-8 vehicles that are vital to our day-to-day operations. We need someone who can perform routine maintenance and keep records. We also need volunteers who can respond to emergencies, especially for repair of the vans.
  6. Doctors/Dentists
There are currently 12 women and 4 children who have need of both routine and emergency medical/dental care.
  7. Food Pantry Worker
Weekly Commitment - Abba House opens their food pantry every Thursday to people in our community. We need workers from 2:00-5:00 to give out food boxes as well as organize the pantry contents.
  8. Grocery Store Gift Cards
We have many of the supplies and food for the women and children at Abba House donated. Sometimes we have 5 of something we don’t need and none of what we do need. We shop primarily at Kroger, Publix and Ingles.
  9. Abba House Thrift Store
We need donated furniture, appliances, office furniture, household goods and clothing in good condition.
  10. Supplies
We need paper and cleaning products on a regular basis.
  11. Meat
    Meats other than chicken.

AS NEEDED OPPORTUNITIES
The following opportunities’ commitment levels will vary.

  1. Fundraisers/Grantwriters
Abba House has need of an individual to organize and conduct fundraisers on an on-going basis. Our residents rarely have the means to support themselves while in the program and the Thrift Store is the only other means of support for the ministry.
  2. Neighborhood Donation Pick Ups
We need individuals to contact neighborhood Homeowner’s Associations and arrange for and coordinate quarterly pick ups in their neighborhood of items that can be sold in the Abba House Thrift Store.
  3. Construction Supervisor/Workers in All Areas of Construction
Within the next several months, we plan to begin construction of our new 50 bed facility on the back of the property where we are currently located. We are depending on volunteers from the community to share supervision of the entire construction process as well as donate materials and labor.
  4. GED/Adult Literacy Instructors
From time to time we have residents who need literacy or GED instruction. We are in need of someone who can evaluate needs, recommend remediation, and teach classes.
  5. Installation/Support Beams Above Thrift Store
Before we can finish office/classroom space already built above the Thrift Store, we need someone to install steel beams for added support. The beams have been donated.
  6. Furniture for New House
We have a house we will be renting until we have our new building finished. We need good quality, good condition furniture to furnish the women’s new home.
  7. Transportation for Women
We need a 20+ passenger van transportation to church.
  8. Building Materials for New Building
Ready Mix Concrete, Lumber, Windows, Doors, etc. . .
